Transforming lives with Christ! ♦ ¡Transformando vidas con Cristo!

Please keep in prayer the parish family of Alleluia. Due to the large amounts that we received in the past couple of days the ceiling in the narthex of our parish home collapsed at some time between Monday night and Tuesday morning. We are working with our roofing company and insurance company to get this fixed. We are also going to be working to get the damaged drywall and possibly the carpet repaired too.

Transforming lives with Christ! ♦ ¡Transformando vidas con Cristo!

Luke 11:1-13
Stories of Discipleship: A Seeker’s Story
Focus Question: How does Jesus want you to pray?

word of life
[Jesus] was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” Luke 11:1 (NRSV)

Read Luke 11:1-13
“Lord, teach us to pray.” One doesn’t expect the disciples of Jesus to ask him such a question. Don’t all people know how to pray? But they had witnessed Jesus taking time for prayer throughout his ministry. He prayed at his baptism (Luke 3:21), before he called his disciples (Luke 6:12), as he was transfigured on the mountain (Luke 9:28-29), and at other times. In fact, he was praying just before the disciples asked him to teach them to pray.

Somehow the disciples must have heard about John the Baptist teaching his followers how to pray. Thus, they want to learn from their own rabbi Jesus. Jesus responds by teaching them the Lord’s Prayer. It is a simple prayer, but reveals much of the teachings of Jesus.
1. How did you learn the Lord’s Prayer?
2. How is the prayer in Luke similar or dissimilar to the Lord’s Prayer used by your congregation?
3. How do you keep God’s name holy?
4. What does it mean to pray “your kingdom come”?
5. What is included in daily bread?
6. This prayer assumes we forgive everyone indebted to us, but what if we don’t forgive?

Jesus continues his teachings on prayer with an illustration of a person in need at midnight. He visits his friend’s home and persists making his request for bread until his sleeping friend complies.
7. Give an example of how someone’s persistence (perhaps even nagging) paid off.
8. What can we learn about prayer through this illustration?

Next, Jesus speaks directly and clearly to his disciples. When it comes to prayer, we are to ask, seek, and knock. Prayer is not passive, but the one who prays is to be an active participant in prayer. Jesus promises his disciples that their requests will be met. “For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.” (Luke 11:10 NRSV)

He tries to relate prayer to their personal lives and their care for their own children. If a child asks a parent for something to drink because of thirst, the parent responds. If a child wants fish, no loving parent would give a snake.

God is loving and desires to answer our prayers with good gifts. Unfortunately, like children we sometimes do not always ask for fish or eggs, but insist on unhealthy things for our life. We cannot always see what is for our best. Fortunately, God knows our needs.
9. How has God responded to your prayer requests?
10. Summarize the teachings of Jesus on prayer.

word among us
Annie had never learned to swim, but the first time she entered the swimming pool, she fell in love with the water. She approached the lifeguard meekly and asked, “Teach me to swim.”

Jake loved chemistry. Finally, he made the connection between cooking and chemistry. He realized cooking was one big chemistry experiment. He became excited to learn all he could about cooking. So, he begged his grandmother, “Teach me to cook.”
1. Give an example of needing instruction in order to learn.
2. Give an example of needing a second instructor to hone your skills.
3. What is the benefit of additional instruction?

People learn in different ways. Some need personal instruction, while others love to learn on their own through reading or hands-on activities.
4. Reflect on your own style of learning.
5. How have you learned best about prayer?

Probably the disciples knew how to pray, but they wanted to have a deeper understanding about the way Jesus prayed. So they asked Jesus to teach them to pray. The outcome of that question is the Lord’s Prayer as well as other teachings on prayer.
6. How often do you pray the Lord’s Prayer?
7. What is the role of the Lord’s Prayer in your own devotions?
8. How does the Lord’s Prayer reflect the priorities of Jesus?
9. What is the hardest petition for you in the Lord’s Prayer?

Jesus modeled prayer by praying, particularly at key points in his life. Prayer was not a theory to be pondered, but a practice to be lived. Jesus placed prayer as a priority in his own life. Jesus kept close to God and God’s will through prayer.
10. If Jesus needed time to pray, why wouldn’t we need to pray?
11. What happens to us when we do not pray on a regular basis?

Prayer is not something to check off a list and declare it finished for the day. The story of the friend who visits at midnight and persists until he gets food reminds us to be persistent in prayer. Pray like we mean it and depend on God to reply.
12. How would you rate your prayer life?
13. What can you learn from the midnight visitor who persists until his request is granted?
14. How might you take time this week for prayer? Use Luke 11:1-13 as part of your daily devotions. Ask God what you need to be asking for in your prayer.

Prayer
Lord, teach us to pray. Teach us to pray with persistence, trusting in God to hear and respond. We thank you for your invitation to come to you in prayer like a child comes to a loving parent. Amen.

Transforming lives with Christ! ♦ ¡Transformando vidas con Cristo!

Luke 10:38-42
Stories of Discipleship: A Distracted Woman’s Story
Focus Question: How do we lessen distractions in order to hear Jesus?

word of life
“But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.’” Luke 10:41-42 (NRSV)

Read Luke 10:38-42
Mary and Martha are mentioned in the Gospels of Luke and John; this story is the only reference in Luke. In the Gospel of John, we learn more about these sisters from Bethany, particularly at the death of their brother Lazarus. (John 11:1-27)

In John 11:5, we read how Jesus loved this family of siblings: Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. It is Mary who anoints the feet of Jesus with perfume and wipes them with her hair. (John 11:2) When their brother is ill, it is Mary and Martha who sends a message alerting Jesus, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” (John 11:3 NRSV) But Jesus does not depart and rush to see him, but waits two days. By the time Jesus arrives, Lazarus has died.
1. How do you respond in hearing how Jesus loved this family?

After the death of Lazarus it is assertive Martha who comes out from the home to greet Jesus while her sister Mary stays home. Martha is forthright as she speaks to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” (John 11:21 NRSV) Yet, it is also Martha who in this same conversation with Jesus proclaims her faith in the resurrection and Jesus, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day. . .Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world.” (John 11:24, 27 NRSV)

Martha returns to the house to tell Mary that Jesus is asking for her. This time Mary leaves the home, finds Jesus, kneels at his feet, weeps and repeats the words of Martha. Jesus is greatly disturbed by Mary’s sorrow and the death of Lazarus. His response is to raise Lazarus from death.

In Luke 10:38-42 Jesus visits the home of Martha. This ownership of property by a woman is worth noting. We find Martha taking charge and preparing the food. No doubt Martha wants to please her guest and gets caught up with the details. She cannot help but notice her sister’s lack of involvement with the preparations. Martha takes it personally. “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself. Tell her then to help me.” (Luke 10:40 NRSV) As much as Jesus instructs people to go and do, there are times he advises to sit and learn. Mary understands the sacredness of that day and the opportunity to learn from her teacher.
2. How would you describe Martha?
3. How would you describe Mary?
4. Where do you find yourself in the story?

Jesus refers to “only one thing” in verse 10:41. Some translate that phrase to be “few things are necessary” or “only one”.
5. What is that “one, only, necessary thing”?
6. What is the message for us?
word among us
Martha was in charge of the annual garage sale at the church. The whole town knew it was the best garage sale of the year, and buyers came early in the morning for bargains. On the morning of the garage sale, the volunteers were busy with their final assignments before the doors officially opened for the sale. Martha was making a final review of the back closet in search for hidden items to be included in the sale. Thus she did not realize a guest had wandered into the sale. He was an old man with white hair, a cane, and a twinkle in his eye.

This old man was a storyteller and wove together his adventures as a missionary in Africa, working beside Desmond Tutu. Slowly the volunteers stopped whatever activity and paused to listen to his stories and reflections of his faith. Not Martha. She kept on working. When Maratha finally realized the other volunteers had stopped their job assignments and were hanging on every word from this man, she could not help herself. Martha stomped over to the old man and asked him directly, “Do you not care that we are in the middle of a garage sale and you are distracting my volunteers?”
1. What was so special about this man?
2. Was Martha distracted or the only one in the room focused? How so?

The old man stopped and looked deep into her eyes. He asked her, “By any chance is your name Martha?” With that question, the group, including Martha, began to chuckle. Martha knew she was a true Martha.
3. How are you like Martha?
4. When do you get caught up in being busy and miss the “only one thing”?
5. What does it mean to be task-oriented?
6. How might being focused on a task be helpful?
7. When is it detrimental?

Jesus saw things clearly. He could see the distractions of Martha were pulling her from Jesus whom she desired to serve. There’s a certain irony with this. Martha’s good nature and kind spirit meant she wanted to extend hospitality to Jesus. But in serving Jesus, Martha missed time with her guest. Martha had good intentions, but her tasks overcame her intentions.
8. Have you ever volunteered for something but worked so hard you became exhausted and could not enjoy the event? What happened?
9. How can you offset your “Martha” tendencies?

Jesus simplified things for Martha and encouraged her to focus on one thing. His model for this is Mary, the sister who sat, listened, and learned. Mary chose to learn from Jesus. How rare in Jesus’ day for a woman to be given the opportunity to sit and the feet of a rabbi to learn.
10. What is the “one thing” in your life which currently takes your best energy?
11. On what “one thing” does Jesus want us to focus?

Prayer
Creator of all, focus my attention on you. Help me to chose the one thing of your teachings. Help me clarify when I need to be a “Martha” or a “Mary”. Amen

Transforming lives with Christ! ♦ ¡Transformando vidas con Cristo!

Luke 10:25-37
Stories of Discipleship: A Kind Man’s Story
Focus Question: What ways have you exercised compassion this week?

word of life
“Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” Luke 10:36-37 (NRSV)

Read Luke 10:25-37
The lawyer tests Jesus by asking questions to which he already knows the correct answer. Why bother asking a question when you already know the answer? The lawyer probably thought he could outwit Jesus. Perhaps he felt he knew the law better than Jesus. Clearly, the lawyer is outmatched.

The lawyer proceeds to ask two questions – one involves eternal life and the other question concerns the definition of “neighbor”. He understands the law to include loving God with all of oneself as well as loving your neighbor. So what is the problem? Jesus encourages the lawyer to go and live his faith. But the lawyer is discontent. Who is my neighbor? He wants to reduce and limit love into a narrowly-defined category. Jesus responds with a story known as the “Good Samaritan”.
1. When do you remember first hearing the story of the Good Samaritan?
2. What is so shocking about this story?

In telling the story, Jesus uses a believable situation told in the setting of familiar towns and with realistic characters. The road from Jerusalem to Jericho was well-traveled in the first century. It was a rocky road with rough terrain, hills, and crevices where attackers could easily ambush unwitting travelers. In the story, Jesus describes a violent crime which leaves the victim half-dead and in need of more than a mere band-aid.

Since the road is well-traveled, it is probable for travelers to see the injured man and offer assistance. Both a priest and a Levite pass by, but they do not help. It is possible these men were compassionate, but could not respond because they were bound to stay ritually pure and could not be near the blood on the wounded man.
3. Why do you think the priest and Levite chose not help the injured man?
4. Do you believe they left to get help for the injured man? Why or why not?

Surprisingly, it is a Samaritan who stops to provide care and compassion. In the time of Jesus, the Samaritans were treated as outcasts because of their ancestor’s decision to intermarry and not follow the religious laws during the time of exile. Keep in mind, the Jews returned from exile between 538 BC (edict of Cyrus) and 515 BC (completion of the temple). Thus, this attitude towards the Samaritans had been harbored for over five centuries.
5. Tell this parable using a modern-day setting and characters.
6. In your opinion, who would be cast as the least likely to help today if someone was in need?

The Samaritan himself bandaged the wounds of the injured man, placed him on his animal, took him to the inn, and paid for his care. The Samaritan walked the walk of kindness and compassion. Jesus concludes, “Go and do likewise.” (Luke 10:37)
word among us
Kindness! Acts of kindness! Generous acts of kindness!

People of faith worked together to respond to the tremendous pain and agony from Hurricane Katrina and the breech of the levees. Homes were open to evacuees who needed a bed. Places of worship were open to strangers who needed shelter and food. Stories of kindness and compassion continue to be told as people share their Katrina tales.

One family left New Orleans with their fifteen-year-old son for a weekend tennis tournament in Jackson, Mississippi. The tournament went well. But by the time they got the news of the severity of the hurricane, the roads into New Orleans had been reversed in order to speed the flow of the evacuation. There was no access back into the city. They never saw their home in tact again. It was totally destroyed. Thus, the family was left with only their clothes from the tennis weekend. Their pain is apparent as they tell their Katrina tale, but they also share their gratitude for the acts of kindness extended to them and their neighbors.
1. Share a Katrina tale – yours or one you have heard from someone else.
2. What motivates people to become Good Samaritans in times of need?

In the aftermath of the devastation in the Gulf Coast area from Hurricane Katrina, Jews, Muslims, and Christians worked together in new ways to extend compassion. Baptist men, women clergy, and Hindus rolled up their sleeves and helped each other to relieve suffering. People of faith who disagreed on doctrines and theology found ways to reach out with a unified purpose and spirit, overcoming long-held barriers and walls.
3. Why does it take the devastation of a disaster to tear down barriers between people of faith?
4. How does God bless those who extend care?

Long-term recovery from Hurricane Katrina will take decades – note the plural. Volunteers are still needed to help in the Gulf Coast area to restore lives, homes, and communities. Victims still need to tell their story again and again. Healing comes through that process. Prayerfully consider traveling to the area on a prayer pilgrimage. (See a sample of a self-guided prayer pilgrimage on www.futurewithhope.org.) Become a Katrina Good Samaritan.
5. How did your community respond to Hurricane Katrina and the breech of the levees?
6. How might you respond in the coming year?

In the parable, Jesus was clear in his definition of a good neighbor. The Samaritan showed deep compassion and personally got involved in the injured man’s care. Jesus concluded, “Go and do likewise.”
7. How might you “go and do likewise”?

Prayer
God of compassion, it is easy to walk past those who are in need. It is not that we do not care or are selfish, we simply are too preoccupied and busy. We confess our mis-directed priorities and ask for your guidance and patience. Open our hearts and eyes to those who are in need. Amen
Luke 10:1-11, 16-20
Stories of Discipleship: A Harvester’s Story
Focus Question: What are the joys and frustrations of harvesting for God’s kingdom?

word of life
“The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” Luke 10:2 (NRSV)

Read Luke 10:1-11, 16-20
Jesus is on a mission. Time is getting short and there is so much to do. In Luke 9, Jesus predicts his own death and challenges would-be followers about the difficulties ahead. In Luke 10, Jesus appoints seventy disciples and sends them off by twos. These teams of two are to go to the villages and make preparations for Jesus to visit. Thirty-five teams is an impressive number of ambassadors to be dispersed for Jesus.
1. What would it have been like to be on one of those teams?
2. Why send so many teams?

The seventy are no longer to be in the background, listening to Jesus. Like John the Baptist, the seventy are being asked to prepare the way for Jesus. Each person might be asked to speak clearly about the Messiah. Jesus is in the process of training his disciples and passing on the mission. It is an exciting transition, but these disciples are not to rely on their own abilities. “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” (Luke 10:2 NRSV)
3. What does it mean for the harvest to be plentiful?
4. What happens to the harvest if laborers do not respond?
5. Why involve the Lord in harvesting?

Jesus then gives traveling instructions to his followers. The seventy are being sent “like lambs into the midst of wolves.” (Luke 10:3) These harvesters are not to take a purse, bag, or sandals, but rely on the hospitality of others. Instead of tangible items for their travels, the seventy take the gift of peace for their hosts.
6. What is the advantage of traveling so light?
7. How is trust an issue in their mission?

As guests, this is not the time to be selective about food and drink. Simply, eat and drink what is offered. Jesus understands his mission is bigger than dietary laws and prepares his followers to interact with the Gentiles. The seventy are to proclaim the nearness of God’s kingdom.

But Jesus warns his followers. Not all will receive them well or desire to hear the good news of Jesus. If they are rejected, the followers are to simply move on and let God handle those who reject them. In this way, their mission parallels the rejection of the prophets.
8. Do you believe it was helpful for the seventy to hear about the possible rejection? How so?
9. Why would people reject the seventy?

Despite the warnings of rejection, it appears the seventy are received warmly and much good is done on behalf of Jesus. But Jesus sternly warns them about becoming too boastful about their success. Any success is because God’s Spirit has been at work, not because of their own skill level. These followers are to rejoice in God’s love for them.

word among us
It was time for the harvest, but no one was there to pick the vegetables from the garden. All the time spent planting, weeding, and watering was being wasted. Actually, Abraham, the owner of the garden, was in the hospital, too sick to ask someone to tend the harvest.

But Abraham had a good friend who had listened for hours to Abraham talk about the progress of the garden. As soon as the friend heard about Abraham being in the hospital, he drove to Abraham’s home to check on the garden. The friend didn’t know much about gardening, but he knew it was time to harvest. But when he saw Abraham’s garden, he shook his head. This was not a small garden; Abraham had planted his largest garden in years. The harvest was plentiful!

Sure enough when Abraham finally was able to talk, his first question was, “Did someone harvest my garden?”
1. Give an example of when you served as a harvester.
2. How much does the harvester determine the time to harvest?
3. What does it feel like to harvest the fruit of your labor?
4. What does it feel like to harvest the labor of another? Give an example.

Not all of us have personal tales of harvesting. Yet, the image still works – even for urban and suburban residents. It doesn’t take much to appreciate the sense of urgency associated with harvesting. The gardener and farmer wait until the right time for the harvest -- not too early or too late.
5. Describe the joy of reaping the harvest.
6. What role does God play in the harvest?
7. How does this apply to making disciples?

In this passage, Jesus is not talking about fruits and vegetables, but the right time to tell others about the kingdom of God and Jesus. There are many who have never heard the good news about Jesus, but the Holy Spirit creates the harvest time when the fruit is ripe. Workers are needed to assist in the harvest.
8. How do you discern the “right time” to talk with someone about Jesus?
9. Take time to reflect on harvesting stories, when you were involved in making disciples. In other words, when have you walked with someone growing in their faith in Jesus Christ?

Jesus confronts the issue of pride when his disciples are successful. (Luke 10:16-20) As much as it is helpful for the disciples to be confident in their work, it is more essential for those same disciples to point to the work of the Holy Spirit. It is all about God, not them.
10. When does it get confusing about God’s work and our work?
11. What helps to remind you to give the credit to God?

Prayer
Creator of all, help us to be ready to bloom where we are planted and to be ready to harvest what you have nurtured. Use us as your workers to expand your reign on this earth. Amen.

Luke 9:51-62
Stories of Discipleship: An Apostle’s Story
Focus Question: What does the commitment to follow Jesus include?

word of life
“But Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:60 (NRSV)

Read Luke 9:51-62
Jesus is single-minded in his purpose in his limited amount time on his earthly pilgrimage. In Luke 9, Jesus sets his face to Jerusalem. Physically, mentally, and spiritually Jesus prepares for Jerusalem and all that will bring. Today, some might say he was “in the zone” as he walked through villages.
1. Describe the attitude of Jesus.
2. What does it mean “to set your face” towards something?
3. What does it mean to be”in the zone”?

Jesus meets rejection in one of the Samaritan villages. As much as James and John are ready to bring down fire and consume the misguided Samaritans, Jesus shows restraint. It is doubtful if these disciples have had much experience with being rejected for the sake of Jesus. Thus, they might not have had a chance to follow the teachings of Jesus by shaking the dust off their feet when people reject them. Consequently, Jesus rebukes his very own disciples and moves on to another village. Jesus focuses on more important things related to his mission.
4. What does it feel like to be rejected?
5. Does being rejected justify the disciples desire to bring down fire?
6. How can Jesus simply move on?

Jesus asks his disciples to be single-minded as they follow him. In many ways, he desires each disciple to get into “the zone” as each disciple sets his or her mind towards the cross. His followers embrace following him, but are not fully aware of the implications.

Someone offers to follow Jesus wherever he goes. That’s quite a commitment. Jesus warns that faithful discipleship is a wandering, unsettled life as he responds, “And Jesus said to him, ‘Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’” (Luke 9: 57 NRSV)

To another disciple, Jesus extends an invitation to follow him. The prospective disciple’s reply is reasonable. He only wants to bury his dead father. Again, Jesus is single-minded. He expects an immediate response from anyone who hopes or dares to follow him. That immediacy includes even at the time of death.

Another tries to explain how quickly he will be available to follow him, but again Jesus rejects everything except total loyalty. The response is to be immediate and decisive. Jesus does not want lukewarm followers.

These followers will be sent out to adverse circumstances in the name of Jesus. They need to be rooted in God’s word and empowered by God’s Spirit. Jesus is truly preparing them for what lies ahead.
7. If you were with Jesus, would you be persuaded not to follow Jesus?

word among us
Ginger was old enough to ride her bike to the neighborhood store. She had always ridden with an adult; but she had gone so many times, she was confident of the way. On the first day of summer vacation, she begged her grandmother to let her go all by herself. Her grandmother consented but stood at the end of the driveway until she was out of sight.

It was difficult for the grandmother to realize her granddaughter was old enough to venture out on her own, but it was time. Within a short time, Ginger came bounding into the house with a big grin on her face. All went well.
1. Give an example of training someone to take over a responsibility.
2. How does it feel to let go and let that person take over?

Jesus works long and hard with his disciples, molding them into disciples. He lives, eats, walks, and interacts with them, teaching them through his life as well as through parables and direct verbal instruction. When he feels they are ready, he sends them off to teach others.

All along, Jesus is preparing the disciples for the difficult task of being apostles, ones sent in his name to continue his mission. Jesus keeps his expectations of his followers clear. Jesus invests all in his proclamation of the kingdom of God. Thus, Jesus has no house or deep connections which distract him from his mission.

Jesus expects his followers to be faith-filled and single-minded in their devotion. This is especially illustrated in his remarks to the man who wants to bury his father (Luke 9:59-60)
3. Is it reasonable for the grieving to want to bury their dead? How so?
4. What does it mean to “let the dead bury the dead”?
5. What is the point of Jesus?

The next disciple wants to say farewell to his loved ones before following Jesus. Yet, Jesus appears to discourage any allegiance that would distract from following him.
6. Is Jesus being reasonable in his expectations?
7. Do these standards apply for us today?
8. How are these expectations to be lived out on a daily basis?

Again, Jesus is preparing would-be followers for the difficult, challenging life of being an apostle, one sent to proclaim God’s kingdom. Certainly, there are rewards to proclaim the good news of Jesus, but that path may include rejection and persecution. Without a doubt, the story of a disciple is one of commitment.

Prayer
O Jesus, you call us to follow you with full commitment. Fill us with courage and strength to follow you wherever you might send us. Amen
John 14:23-29
Prayers of Discipleship To Keep God’s Word
Focus Question: How do you show your love for God by keeping God’s word in your life?

word of life
Jesus answered, “Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” John 14:23 (NRSV)

Read John 14:23-29
Jesus continues his final instructions to his disciples at his last supper before his death. He has already washed the feet of his disciples and given them a new commandment to love one another. As a teacher who loves his students, Jesus gently prepares them for the time when he will not be with them. It is clear to Jesus that he needs to go and prepare a place for them.

But Jesus is committed to not leaving the disciples alone. Take a moment and read through John 14. Jesus explains with great compassion his expectations for his followers after he has departed. Again the theme is love, but with an emphasis on the fruits of love. He urges each disciple to keep his commandments as an expression of love. They are not obligated to do so, but love compels people to act in such ways to complement and reflect favorably on the loved one.
How does following the commandments of Jesus help people to love?
How easy is it for humans to follow the commandments of Jesus?

In John 14:23, Jesus makes a reference to his Father and himself making a home with those who keep the commandments. This Greek word used for “home” is used only twice in the New Testament and both times are found in John 14. First, Jesus uses the word in John 14:2 to express the heavenly dwelling places within his Father’s house. In verse 23, Jesus uses the word to describe God settling in our lives while on this earth. Consequently, by using the same word, Jesus connects our heavenly home with God and God at home in us on this earth. Imagine, God setting up residence in your life.
Describe what it means for God to make a home within you.
What does that type of home look like?

Jesus teaches and expects those who love Jesus will bear fruit. In order to so, followers of Jesus need to stay close to his teachings and ways. But this teaching is not solely made by Jesus; instead he speaks on behalf of his Father in heaven.
Is this a reasonable expectation? Why or why not?
How do the life and teachings of Jesus help clarify God’s word?

Jesus speaks to his disciples as one who has lived among them, sharing their joys and troubles of this life. But soon Jesus will depart from them. He knows that. Thus, his gift to them is the Holy Spirit, often called Advocate or Helper. They need not fear because they will not be alone. The Spirit will continue to teach, remind, encourage, and give them peace. Yet, the peace given is not a removal from troubled times. Jesus knows the coming days will bring agony and grief to his followers. He hopes his words of preparation will assure his disciples of the active presence and plan of God.
How might the disciples have felt as they listened to the words by Jesus?
Compare the kind of peace given by this world to the peace described by Jesus in John 14:27.
word among us
When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in August, 2005, over 1,000,000 people evacuated from the New Orleans area. A study from the Louisiana State University sociology department showed over 50% of homes in Baton Rouge became a shelter for someone. Families, friends, and acquaintances sought refuge and sanctuary from the storm.

Most people expected this evacuation to be like those of the past and last a few days. Pets, refrigerated food, and some clothing were brought. But, the levees were breached and the flooding began. Instead of a few days, these homes became shelters for weeks and even months. September, October, and November passed. It was one thing to open your home for a short-time to someone in need; it was something else for the guests to make your home their long-term residence.
What stories have you heard about the hospitality extended during Hurricane Katrina?
Describe what it would like to host guests in your home for three months.
What changes would you need to make in your lifestyle and home to accommodate long-term guests?

Jesus teaches that those who love him will keep his word, thus providing an opening for God to make a home in their lives. It is quite fascinating to imagine God moving into our lives on a permanent basis.
What would it be like for you to have God set up residence in your life?
What changes would you need to make in your lifestyle to accommodate God?

Hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes are just some of the acts of nature which can grieve people on this earth. The list can be expanded to include illness, death, accidents, and even human acts against one another. Life can be difficult. It is hard to go through this world alone or isolated from others. Jesus knows this. Thus, he promises the Holy Spirit to be present in our lives to encourage, advocate, and help. It is the Spirit who nudges us to follow Jesus and keep his word, but also to have peace despite the troubles of this life.
Read John 14:26-27 again. What gift of the Holy Spirit do you need this week?
What of these words give you hope?
What do you need the Holy Spirit to help you to hear today?

When someone we love departs from us, it hurts. This might be a long-time neighbor or a colleague at work. It is especially true when that loved one departs due to death. Even if death follows a long, painful illness, it is painful to be left alone. It may feel like our anchor is gone. Jesus prepares for his departure and the departures of others in our lives. He reminds us that we are not alone. He sends the best – his own Spirit – to serve as a helper. It is that Spirit which gives us peace to endure the troubles of this world and to anticipate the joys of the next world.
What do you hope to remember from this lesson?

Prayer
Come O Advocate; Come Holy Spirit, Come set up residence in our lives. Keep us closely connected to the teachings of Jesus. Hold us steadfast in faith. Give us peace; and take away our fears. In Christ, we pray. Amen

John 13:31-35
Prayers of Discipleship To Love Another
Focus Question: How can I show my love for God by loving people?

word of life
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.” John 13:34 (NRSV)

Read John 13:31-35
On the night of his arrest, Jesus gathers his disciples together to celebrate the festival of the Passover. It is his last supper with the disciples. Not only had he taught them, but he had healed people, walked on water, and performed other miracles. They had learned much from him, but there was much yet to learn.

To show his love for the disciples and those whom they would be called to serve, Jesus knelt down and washed their dirty and dusty feet. (John 13:1-20) Cleaning feet was an act reserved for servants. Precisely. Jesus took the form of a servant and washed their feet.
What would it have felt like to have your feet washed by Jesus?
What comes to your mind when you hear this passage?

Jesus predicts the betrayal of one person at the table. This baffles the disciples; they try to determine who among them might do such a thing. They trust each other and their good intentions. Nevertheless, it is Judas who leaves that intimate scene to do just that.

After Judas leaves, Jesus shares some final words with his students. It is not a speech of gloom, but rather points to God’s glory. The path of Jesus towards death and resurrection is a path which ultimately brings glory. Jesus knows the coming days will not make sense to the followers gathered in that room. It is too much for them to comprehend.

His words become tender as Jesus addresses them by calling them “little children.” As much as Jesus loves them, he knows he needs to leave them in order for God’s glory to come to fruition. He alone must walk this path to his death and to resurrected life. The disciples may think they are ready to accompany Jesus, but he knows they are not yet ready.
What does it mean for Jesus to call his disciples “little children”?
What does Jesus mean when he says “Where I am going, you cannot go”?

Then Jesus gives his disciples a new commandment. It is short and easy to remember. Jesus mandates his disciples to love one another. That command might not seem too hard, until Jesus defines the standard of love. These very human disciples are to love as Jesus loves. That means washing the feet of people, forgiving others, and even giving one’s life for them. His model of love is that of God.
What does it mean to love like Jesus?

Jesus knows people will be watching his disciples. Will they give up after Jesus is no longer with them? Is Jesus merely a fad? Jesus knows these disciples will be a positive witness to Jesus and his love if and when they love one another as Jesus loves them. Love like Jesus. It is a tall order, but those are the final words of Jesus to his disciples of every age.
How do actions of students reflect their teacher?

word among us
The principal of the high school stopped by the baseball field to see his team play in their first baseball game of the season. Having been a baseball player in high school and college, he was always eager for that first pitch of the season. But it was a painful game for the principal to watch. His high school team played horribly. The catcher couldn’t catch the ball. Not at all. What a disappointment!

As the principal walked to the parking lot, he noticed the catcher staring at a flat tire on the player’s car. That same catcher who couldn’t catch the baseball was proving he couldn’t change a tire either. The principal sighed and offered to help. As the principle rolled up his sleeves, he began to sweat in the heat of the day. The student protested, “No, you are my principal. You can’t get dirty while changing my tire. This is not right.”

But the principal kept on with his task, getting more sweaty and dirty with each passing moment. And in each moment, a special relationship between the principal and the catcher was being forged.
How might that relationship between the principal and catcher change once they work together on the tire?
What are some other examples of a teacher or leader who reverses things by taking on the role of a servant?
If Jesus lived today, what parallel task of a servant might he have done, instead of washing feet?

Jesus follows up his action of love by commanding the disciples to love another. Love, love, Love! It seems that is all Jesus talks about.
Why does Jesus keep repeating this message of love?
What makes it challenging to love the people in your world?

Just because someone, even Jesus, commands us to love, it just doesn’t happen automatically. But clearly, Jesus places love as a high priority on his list. The standard is his kind of loving.
How does the way Jesus shares love compares or contrasts with what is presented on television or in movies?
Who is teaching you to love like Jesus?

Loving like Jesus becomes a powerful witness to Jesus. People can observe our behavior and learn something about Jesus and his way of loving.
As people observe you, what might they learn about your teacher Jesus?
In what situation, do you best reflect the love of Jesus?
In what situations is it difficult to love?
Based on these insights, how might God assist you in loving like Jesus?

Prayer
Loving Jesus, we hear your commandment to love. We are willing, but show us to live your love in a consistent, ongoing way. Amen

John 10:22-30
Prayers of Discipleship To Hear the Voice of the Good Shepherd
Focus Question: What does it mean to listen to Jesus?

word of life
“My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand.” John 10:27-28 (NRSV)

Read John 10:22-30
The Fourth Sunday of Easter has long been called “Good Shepherd Sunday”. Typically, Psalm 23 is read or sung. As we savor the mystery and joy of the resurrection of Jesus, we are reminded of Jesus as savior, but also as shepherd.
What do you know about sheep?
What does it mean to be a “good shepherd”?

John is quite detailed in his description of Jesus in the temple during the festival of the Dedication, Hanukkah. The Jews gather around him to discuss his identity. They want a clear, precise, concise, and direct answer concerning his identity. Is he the Messiah or not? This is not the first time for the Jews to try to sort out his identity.

On previous occasions, Jesus has talked with them and backed up his words with actions. He has given sight to the blind, healed the sick, fed thousands, and proclaimed good news; but they cannot grasp his identity,
What seems to be blocking the Jews from understanding Jesus as the Messiah?
Why do others more easily grasp the identity of Jesus?

Since Jesus has already answered their questions, he speaks directly to them. “I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name testify to me; but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep.” (John 10:25-26)
How does one become part of the flock of Jesus?
Why would someone choose not to belong?

Jesus describes what it means to belong to his own flock. His sheep know his voice and choose to follow. But Jesus is not the only voice vying for attention and listeners. His call may go unheeded as people chase after other shepherds. It is one thing to listen, but it is something else to listen and respond accordingly. This raises the question about listening skills and discerning. The Jews might have heard his words, but they did not respond with any kind of commitment or action. Jesus extends his call and voice, expecting people to follow him.
How do we make sure we listen to the true and good shepherd of Jesus?
What does it mean to be known by Jesus?

Jesus promises eternal life and safety, saying “No one will snatch them out of my hand.” (John 10:28) These are significant and desirable promises made by Jesus. They might serve as motivation for all who listen to really try to grasp the words of the one whom they question. Jesus makes these claims because he is one with God. Their unity cannot be denied. This connection to God only strengthens his claims and promises.
How might the crowd have responded?
How do the words of Jesus carry more strength because of his unity with God?

word among us
It is not unusual for tennis fans to applaud after a good point in a tennis game. At a junior tennis match, it was noted one parent had a unique rhythm in his clapping as he clapped for his son’s good point. It was obvious to the crowd that the father wanted his son to hear his encouragement through his unique style of applause.
How might that feel for a young tennis player to hear the rhythm of his father’s clapping and realize his presence in the crowd?
How might the father feel, knowing he was able to add extra support and encouragement to his son?

The congregation gathered for their annual spring picnic on the lawn of the church. Laughter filled the air as people waited in line for their food. Over the noise of the crowd, a child’s shrill scream was heard followed by the sound of wailing. A young woman left her plate of food and quickly dashed to the scene. She looked back and said, “I recognize that cry. That’s my child.”
How does a parent learn the cry of his or her child?
At what point does a child recognize the voice of a parent?
Any ideas why teenagers sometimes lose that ability to hear their parent’s voice?

Jesus is confident that his sheep hear his voice and respond. His voice must be unique enough to be clearly heard by all who listen, but there is the dilemma. What if a person is not in a relationship with Jesus? How would a person recognize the voice of the shepherd? Would it not be the voice of a stranger? Hopefully, those who grew up in church have the advantage of learning to listen to Jesus through Word and Sacrament.

Take a few minutes to reflect on those people in your life who taught you about prayer and listening to Jesus. Ponder their lives. Recall their stories about how and when they learned to listen to Jesus. Consider the patterns and rhythms in their own prayer life.
Who are some of the people who taught you to listen to Jesus?
What have they taught you about prayer?
When it comes to listening to Jesus, what is important to know?
How confident are you to hear Jesus?
How might you increase your listening skills towards Jesus?

Learning to listen to Jesus is a life-long process. Listening to Jesus serves as an anchor in this world. Hopefully, you are blessed by those in your life who take prayer seriously and encourage your prayer life to flourish. If not, seek out those who can nurture your prayer life. And also, take advantage of opportunities to encourage others in their prayer life and discernment skills.
Who have you instructed on listening to Jesus?
What prevents you from doing more of this type of instruction?
How might you set aside this coming week for listening to Jesus?

Prayer
Good shepherd, thank you for calling, caring, and extending eternal life. Open our spirits and hearts, so we might hear you. Amen

John 21:1-19
Prayers of Discipleship To Love Jesus
Focus Question: Jesus asks you, “Do you love me?”

word of life
When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” John 21:15 (NRSV)

Read John 21:1-19
After Jesus rose from the dead, life for those disciples would never be the same. His appearances and conversations following his resurrection answered some questions but opened the door to many others. The disciples were walking on uncharted territory, living in a post-Easter world. Sometimes when life is turned upside down, people resort to doing what they know. In the case of Simon Peter, that meant fishing. Some of the other disciples joined him, but on that night no one caught anything.
Does it seem strange to you for Peter to go fishing? Why or why not?
When the fishermen caught nothing, what story about Jesus did you recall?

Jesus appeared to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias (Galilee) where he first called Simon Peter to be his disciple. In a parallel story, Jesus advised the fisherman about where to cast their nets. Consequently, they caught many fish. (Luke 5:1-11) This time, Peter did not realize the fishing advisor was Jesus himself. It took the beloved disciple of Jesus to figure it out. Peter was naked, so he put on clothes and jumped into the sea. Meanwhile, the other disciples got into the boat.
How do you explain the behavior of Peter?
How might Peter have been feeling as he encountered Jesus? (Remember Peter denied knowing Jesus.)

Jesus proceeded to share a breakfast of fish and bread with his hard-working disciples. This was only the third time for Jesus to appear to the disciples, but nobody asked who he was. His identity was clear.
Imagine that breakfast conversation. If you had been at that meal, what would you have asked Jesus?
How might that conversation been similar or different than previous breakfast conversations with Jesus?

After breakfast, Jesus gave Simon Peter a pop quiz of three questions. The questions are brief and direct. After all, Simon Peter had been fishing all night. No doubt he was tired and perhaps frustrated from a night of catching no fish. In reality, Jesus didn’t ask three different questions, but asked the same question three times. Jesus wanted to know, “Do you love me?” It is the type of question deserving a yes or no answer.
Why ask the same question of Simon Peter three times?
What connection is there between this series of questions and Simon Peter denying Jesus three times?

Peter affirmed his love for Jesus after each question. Jesus responded to Peter by giving him the following tasks, “feed my lambs”, “tend my sheep”, and “feed my sheep.”(John 21:15-17). Jesus also foretold the type of martyr’s death of Peter. It is not an easy call to follow Jesus.
What does it mean to feed and tend to lambs and sheep?
If you and Jesus had this exchange, what would you be thinking or feeling?
word among us
Eric had studied hard for his final examination of the year. He felt pressure because he had to pass this test. His future life and dreams were at stake. Slowly, he opened the booklet and discovered the same question on each of the three pages of the exam.
What would you think if you had a test with the same question asked three times?
What would you tend to remember about that experience?

Simon Peter denied Jesus three times just as Jesus had predicted. After the pain of the crucifixion and the joy of the resurrection, Jesus gives Simon Peter three opportunities to affirm his love. There are ministry and mission opportunities ahead for the disciples. Jesus has forgiven Simon Peter and wants him to move on with the tasks of feeding and tending to sheep. Simon Peter’s three-time affirmation of love offsets his three-time denial of Jesus.
How might the memory of Simon Peter’s denial have hindered him in his serving Christ?
Does Simon Peter need to let go of guilt associated with his denial of Jesus? Why or why not?
What makes it difficult to forgive ourselves?

There is a level of intensity with this exchange between Jesus and Peter. Rightly so. Jesus is asking Simon Peter directly to confess his love and his loyalty. The first question is broadest, “Do you love me more than these?” (John 21:15) Imagine to what “these” refers. Is Jesus pointing to the fish, the fishing boats, the disciples, or something else? Jesus knows Simon Peter well. He knows what would draw Simon Peter’s loyalty and love.
If Jesus would stand beside you and ask the same question, what would “these” mean?
What takes your time, energy, and your attention from Jesus?

In the play and movie, My Fair Lady,” Liza Dolittle sings to the man courting her to not speak or sing of his love, but to show it. Words come easy, but is this suitor willing to back up those words with actions? She is tired of words, words, and words.
How are we expected to show our love toward Jesus?
When it comes to love, which comes first – our words or actions?
How can we be consistent with our words and actions of love toward Jesus?

This passage of love followed by the request to feed and tend to the flock is often read when a pastor is ordained and/or installed at a congregation. A pastor is asked to follow in the footsteps of Simon Peter and tenderly care for a flock.
What are your expectations for a pastor to feed and tend to a congregation?
What happens if a congregation does not want to be fed or tended to?
How might a congregation take on some of the responsibilities to feed and tend to others?
What do you want to remember from this story?

Prayer
Jesus, we hear your question about loving you. We hear it thee times. Please, hear our answer. Yes. Yes. Yes. We love you, now and forever. Amen
Dig Deeper: Psalm 30
Ponder this question by Jesus,
“Do you love me?”
Be sure to ask yourself the question three times.

John 20:19-31
Prayers of Discipleship: To Believe With a Trusting Heart
Focus Question: How do you come to believe the Good News of the resurrection?

word of life
“Then Jesus said to Thomas, ’Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.’” (John 20:27)

Read John 20:19-31
The story of “doubting Thomas” from the Gospel of John is the appointed reading every year for the Second Sunday of Easter; and rightly so. In a few brief verses, the disciples of every age come to know the implications of and the gifts bestowed through the resurrection of Christ – the gifts of peace (“peace be with you” vs. 19) and joy (“the disciples rejoiced” vs. 20); the gift of the presence of the risen Christ in the Holy Spirit (“receive the Holy Spirit” vs. 22); the gift of faith (“blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe” vs. 29); and the calling and mission (“as the Father has sent me, so I send you” vs. 21). All these gifts are expressed through the story of one who needed to see in order to believe – the disciple Thomas.
What other gifts do we receive because of the resurrection of Christ?
What do you know about the disciple Thomas?
What does Thomas require in order to believe that Jesus is raised from the dead? Is this a reasonable request?

Some would say that Thomas has been given a bad “rap” throughout the course of Christian history. Thomas simply desires what the other disciples have experienced; he wants to see living, unmistakable proof that Jesus – the same Jesus nailed to the cross and pierced by the soldier’s spear, the Jesus who died and was buried – has been raised from death.
What “proof” or evidence can you give of Jesus’ resurrection?

To focus solely on Thomas would be to miss the power of the message of the narrative. For the Gospel writer John, the experiences of the resurrection, ascension, and Pentecost are all present in these verses. The risen Jesus stands among them and breathes on the disciples gathered (vs. 22) – evidence of life, evidence of God’s power to create life out of that which had no life (See Genesis 2:7 where God “breathed life” into the dust of the ground to create humanity.) The risen Christ gives them the Holy Spirit – the gift of Pentecost. (See Acts 2.) And the risen Christ gives the disciples their mission – “as the Father has sent me, so I send you.” (See the mission mandate spoken by Jesus at the Ascension in Acts 1:8.)
When in our life of faith are we joined to the risen Christ, given the gift of the Spirit, and sent out in mission?

The story concludes with a blessing for disciples of every time and place. Not all were present on that first Easter morning. Not all were able to physically touch the wounded hands and side of Jesus. But the story is told in order that those who hear it might come to believe; and in believing, might know life in Christ’s name (vs. 31).

Maybe the familiar saying is reversed. Perhaps it’s not, “Seeing is believing,” but rather, “Believing is seeing.” Through the eyes of faith, we see the presence of the risen Christ in our midst, giving us the gift of life, forgiveness, and peace, and sending us forth to tell the Good News!
What are some examples of “believing is seeing?”
word among us
Hands … We use them quite a bit. It is said that you can tell a great deal about a person by their hands. The way someone shakes your hand; the rough, calloused hands of a manual laborer; the smooth, soft hands of a baby; the gnarled, arthritic hands of an elder worker – all tell us something about that person’s work and life experiences.
What are some other examples of how hands are used?

Take a few moments to look at your hands.
What do you see?
What do they say about you and your life experiences?

As I look at my hands, I see a callous on my right middle finger where I hold my pen, a reminder that I spend time writing. I see two visible, constant reminders of two relationships in my life – my wedding band, and a ring given to me at my ordination as a pastor. I also see a visible reminder of prior work experiences and how fragile life is. There is a deep scar in the palm of my right hand – a scar from working on a piece of machinery on the farm. My whole hand – my whole arm – could have been caught in it; instead, just a deep scar as a constant reminder that life is a fragile gift.

On that first Easter evening, the grieving, fearful disciples were locked in a room. Suddenly, Jesus came and said, “Peace be with you.” And then he showed them his hands. Just as our hands tell a great deal about ourselves, so too does Jesus’ hands tell us a great deal about him. We see hands of healing giving sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, and strength to the weak. We see hands that bless little children, that raise the dead, and that calm the troubled soul.

Most of all, we see wounded hands. The imprint of the nails of the cross on Jesus’ hands is more than a mark of identification for the disciples. It tells of his love for them, and for us. His wounded hands reveal the price God paid to save us.
What would it mean for you to look at the wounded hands of Jesus?

Jesus came and stood among them and showed them his hands. To Mary Magdalene; to the fearful disciples; to those who doubted; to Thomas, who needed to see in order to believe; to the apostle Paul; to faithful followers – the risen Christ came; and he showed them his wounded hands. And he comes now and shows his wounded hands for our eyes of faith to see – in the breaking of bread, in hands folded in prayer, in healing hands of surgeons, nurses, and caregivers, in hands that reach out in concern for others, providing food for the hungry, offering care, comfort, and support, and guiding our work and our witness.
Where do you see Christ’s hands at work and present in your life?
How might you be used as the hands of Christ to extend care to those in need?

Prayer
O risen Christ, grant us eyes to see your hands at work in our lives. Use us as your hands of love and care to those in need. Amen
